CBSE plans to conduct board exams twice a year starting in 2026 for class X. It has been decided to conduct the annual board exam once in/around February and the second one in/around May. The student's choice of subjects will also depend on this. The Board is about to finalise its plan and introduce the draft for feedback soon.
CBSE Board Exam-Type To Be Proposed
The CBSE board will allow students to appear for both exams and choose the subjects they wish to take. Following the discussion between the ministers concerning the change in exam pattern for class X; education minister Dharmendra Pradhan earlier this week proposed that there will be four modalities -
Semester-based exams
Modular exams
Two-exam format
Demand-based exams
The modular exams and the semester-based exams were discarded to be followed, later.
Exams Will Be There Twice A Year But Annually

The CBSE board has confirmed that it will soon start conducting exams twice and annually (annual board exams for class X). Board Exams Twice A Year – The first exam session will take place in February. And, it will be followed by the second session in May. The entire exam process will be concluded by the time or month of June aligning with UG admissions. The officials also have something to inform the public – Exams are unlikely to be conducted before February because syllabus accommodation will be completed by that time only. In addition, winter disruption will be there because of fog and GRAP at certain locations.
Flexibility To Appear For Both Exams
The students or the candidates appearing for CBSE board exams from 2026 onwards will have the choice or flexibility to appear for both exams and choose the subjects from. For example, if you as a student are satisfied or have successfully covered the passing range of exam 1, then you can opt out to participate in exam 2.
The certificates to be given to the students will cover the best score out of those two exam sessions, obtained in either of two exams. The exams would be or planned to be intentionally conducted with shorter gaps.
There are 7800 schools in Delhi and 25% are CBSE-affiliated. Around lakhs of students participate in CBSE board exams from their individual classes - X.
The CBSE office also informed that it is planning to expand its zonal offices. Likewise, CBSE will also introduce two levels of difficulties for class IX. This would be called the “Basic” and “Standard” difficulty level. Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies would be the basic subjects and the rest would be the additional subjects as envisaged in NE and National Curriculum Framework for school education.
The CBSE Board will soon release the revised structure for the board exams twice a year to be implemented from the 2026 to 2027 session.
